Although the North Germanic group remained in Scandinavia, the other groups moved generally southward and spread out to the east and west. The Goths, Vandals, and Burgundians (East Germanic) moved to the east, then west and south to Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, and NorthAfrica. TheAlamanni, Marcomanni, and Langobardi (Irminones) settled in southern Germany and Italy, and another group in the area of modern Thuringia. A third group (Istvaeones) pushed into the Netherlands, northern France, the Rhineland, and Hesse, HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 21 ultimately forming the kingdom of the Franks, and some of the tribes from the North Sea group, the Angles and Frisians, eventually settled in Britain.
