Auf jeden Fall trauen Horkheimer und Adorno den modemen Wissenschaften ebensowenig wie den neuzeitlichen Rechts- und Moralvorstellungen ein emanzipatorisches Potential gegenUber dem Zwangszusammenhang der Modeme zu; in den diskursiven Erkenntnis- und Urteilsformen der Neuzeit erblicken sie nur die totalitiiren ZUge derselben identifizierenden, instrumentellen Vemunft, die sie doch fUr die Selbstzerstorung der Aufklarung verantwortlich machen.
Er unterscheidet drei Kategorien von Forschungsprozessen und dementsprechend drei erkenntnisleitende Interessen. Den empirisch-analytischen Wissenschaften, die sich von dem Gesichtspunkt leiten lassen, mit Hilfe nomologischer Gesetzesaussagen eine Voraussage und Kontrolle von Ereignissen in der natiirlichen und sozialen Umwelt des Menschen zu erzielen, attestiert Habermas ein technisches Interesse. Die Absicht der erfolgsorientierten, instrumentellen Handlungskontrolle bestimmt in gleicher Weise den ProzeJ3 gesellschaftlicher Arbeit; insofem bleiben die modemen Erfahrungswissenschaften demjenigen Orientierungsmuster verbunden, mit dem die Menschengattung vorwissenschaftlich die Natur bearbeitet.
Luhmann hingegen beschreibt die evolutionare Entwicklung der modemen Gesellschaft als einen Wandel der primaren Form gesellschaftlicher Differenzierung. Demzufolge haben sich in der Modeme gesellschaftliehe Subsysteme herausgebildet, die auf die Erfiillung jeweils einer gesellschaftlichen Funktion hin zugeschnitten sind. Mit der Umstellung des gesellschaftliehen Differenzierungsprinzips gebt, daraufhin laBt sieh die systerntheoretische Zeitdiagnose kurz zusammenfassen, der Verlust einer gesamtgesellschaftliehen Perspektive einher; aus der Perspektive der einzelnen Funktionssysteme stellt sieh die Einheit des Gesellschaftssystems jeweils anders dar.
