Take, for example, Theory of Mind (ToM) – the ability to make inferences about the mental states of other people. The task for the researcher is to steer a careful course between, on the one hand, attributing ToM to a child who does not yet possess it and, on the other hand, failing to attribute ToM to a child who really does possess the ability. There has been a consistent tendency to simplify the demands of tasks that are assumed to assess children’s capacity to make judgments involving ToM. As might be expected, as tasks become progressively simplified, more and more children are able to complete them successfully and so ToM is attributed to children at younger and younger ages with wider and wider characteristics (Flavell, 1992).
