Neuroscience Perspectives on Complexity Complexity is a central concept in current neuroscience studies investigating the relations between brain and mind functions. Before you begin signaling subjects, and even before you start designing questionnaires, there are a number of decisions to be made about the types of research questions to ask, the population to study, the contexts and experiences you are interested in learning about, the equipment to use, and the constraints that a particular sample population or research question might place on the study’s design. In this chapter we review some of the decisions that must be made when designing an ESM study. Some of these issues are unique to experience sampling methodology, while others are more general issues in social science research that often arise in our discussions with novice ESM researchers.
Computerized methods can also be programmed to give participants feedback about their response rates, which may help boost participation throughout the entire course of the study. There is some empirical evidence documenting higher compliance rates with computerized methods compared to paper-and-pencil methods, at least among samples of medical patients (Stone, Shiffman, Schwartz, Broderick, & Hufford, 2002). Computerized methods also allow for greater flexibility in item presentation order, allowing for a variety of fixed or random presentation orders.
