In this chapter we review some of the decisions that must be made when designing an ESM study. Some of these issues are unique to experience sampling methodology, while others are more general issues in social science research that often arise in our discussions with novice ESM researchers.
Computerized methods can also be programmed to give participants feedback about their response rates, which may help boost participation throughout the entire course of the study. There is some empirical evidence documenting higher compliance rates with computerized methods compared to paper-and-pencil methods, at least among samples of medical patients (Stone, Shiffman, Schwartz, Broderick, & Hufford, 2002). Computerized methods also allow for greater flexibility in item presentation order, allowing for a variety of fixed or random presentation orders.
