Second, in the figurative, and therefore political, sense, interpellation (ideological hailing) is the action through which they discover that they are at the mercy of police discretion – since they understand that it is not enough to be innocent in order not to be deemed guilty – and above all through which they become aware that what is happening to them is related not to what they have done, but to what they represent.
