Months later, I was discussing the library project with a leading Pedrano man who was very involved in local politics. ” Indeed, the library project helped me move beyond a romantic view of people and life in San Pedro. I had for the first year been very impressed with the general congeniality of people in San Pedro, who greet each other on the street and are involved in each other’s lives in ways I had not seen growing up in a couple of middle-class EuropeanAmerican towns. Becoming involved in a multifaceted way in San Pedro allowed me to see past my romantic first impressions and realize that San Pedro factions run deep and human relations are complex—across political groups as well as among and within families.
I waited, and waited, while the mayor seemed to be just sitting at his desk, not looking at me but not seeming to be occupied with anything else. Sitting silently for so long was difficult for me, but seemingly not for anyone else in the room. I was tempted to sit on my hands to help me stay silent, but resisted that urge. Eventually, after many minutes, the mayor addressed me, inviting me to speak. I explained that I was interested in studying childrearing practices and children’s thinking in San Pedro, for a project sponsored by the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama.
During the twentieth century, however, the population increased, in part due to vaccines against some of the introduced diseases. In 1974, when I arrived in San Pedro, the town’s population of 5,000 was more than double that of 30 years before, and it has more than doubled again in the meantime. The photos on the next pages show San Pedro across five decades: in 1941, 1975, and 1998. In each pair of photos, the top image is taken from about the same vantage point, and the bottom one shows what a few blocks of the town looked like.
