Die Projektgruppe Civic schooling des Berliner Max-Planck-Instituts für Bildungsforschung hat im Rahmen eines internationalen Forschungsprojektes, an dem sich über 20 Länder beteiligen, den Stand der politischen Bildung in Deutschland erforscht. Untersucht wurden:
- die Vorgaben der Lehrpläne sämtlicher Bundesländer,
- die Einschätzungen von Experten und Expertinnen aus unterschiedlichen Handlungsfeldern zu den Zielen politischer Bildung in der Sekundarstufe I und zu ihrer Realisierung, sowie
- die Projektdokumentationen, die 1995 zum Förderprogramm Demokratisch Handeln eingereicht wurden.
Das Buch enthält zusätzlich einen Anhang über wichtige Einrichtungen und Veröffentlichungen zur politischen Bildung. Dadurch spricht es auch Studierende der politischen Wissenschaft an, die dieses Fach unterrichten wollen.
