Thompson (1942) named the pre-Desmoinesian section in New Mexico the Derryan, but the 39 Morrowan was undifferentiated. The Atoka Formation was raised to series status by Spivey and Roberts (1946), and included strata between the top of the Morrowan Series and the base of the Hartshorne Formation in the overlying Desmoinesian Series.
