Data regarding youths' knowledge of their bodies, a means of measuring perceived self-care capabilities, and glimpses of self-perception among youth with chronic illness were generated. Perceptions of Life Events and Environment Nursing studies of child and adolescent perceptions of life events and environment included exploration of death (Swain, 1979), illness (Brodie, 1974; Williams, 1978), and locus of control (Eggland, 1973).
Fears of separation and death were prevalent. There were no differences in average number reported by gender or race. The developmental framework for the study was clearly presented and consistent with other sturlies on childhood fears (Miller, 1979). Description of methods was extremely scant. Yanni (1982) hypothesized that fearfulness among 10- and 11-year-old females would be related to perception of parental support, punishment, control, and encouragement of autonomy, but found that these parental factors accounted for very little of the variance in the girls' fearfulness (N = 68).
