Ein Kapitel befaßt sich mit dem aktuellen Stand der Pankreastransplantation, und es werden schließlich die Behandlungsfolgen, die Überlebenschancen sowie die Qualität der so gewonnenen Lebensspanne analysiert.

During the same period, an occasional surgeon was making hesitant efforts toward the treatment of clinical pancreatic disease. " In the thirty operations on the pancreas reported by Von Mikulicz-Radecki, there was a single excision of a tumor in the head of the pancreas with a fatal outcome. One of the earliest successful operations involving the excision of the pancreas was that reported by Kausch [6] in 1912. In a two-stage operation he excised the head of the pancreas and duodenum in one of three patients whom he operated upon for carcinoma of the papilla of Vater.
Survival of patients with locally unresectable pancreatic cancer, however, has been improved by combined treatments of radiation therapy and 5-fluorouracil. A more extensive regime of radiation therapy, plus 5-fluorouracil, followed by a combination therapy of streptozocin, mitomycin, and 5-fluorouracil resulted in a 1-year survival rate of 41 % [21]. The possibility of combining resection with such multimodal adjunctive therapy would seem to be a possible approach to improving patient survival with currently available treatment modalities.
